What To Expect

The Sachsenhausen concentration camp, which was supposed to be a prison for political opponents, has become a place of detention for more than 200 000 people, tens of thousands of whom died of starvation and exhaustion in inhumane conditions. On a trip from Berlin to this dreadful place of terror, you'll find out how Nazi architects designed the grounds and buildings intending to subjugate prisoners to the absolute power of the SS. You'll discover the thrill of life in the death camp, learn about the daily life of prisoners and hear terrifying stories about those who slowly died of starvation disease, forced labor, and systematic extermination. During your tour, you'll visit the punishment cells, execution grounds and crematorium, the Pathology Laboratory and Hospital, the gallows and the Jewish barracks. You'll also learn about the Special Camp No. 7/1, when Sachsenhausen became a Soviet camp. Until its closing in 1950, a further 60,000 men were held captive here, mostly former Nazi functionaries, German POWs, and Soviet deserters. Some 12,000 inmates died of hunger, cold and disease under the Soviets.
